My "lightbulb" moment...

Every now and again I have what I call a "lightbulb moment".  You know, the moment when it all begins to make sense again... it usually follows a period of days, weeks, or in this case months of evaluating why...

While scrolling feverishly through my e-mail inbox, navigating through the junk - spam - and generous offers for discounted pahrmaceuticals I was stopped dead in my tracks by this.  An image of style, innovation, and design inspiration.  A moment of clarity and resolution.

This is why I do it...

The Decanter Light designed by Lee Broom is just the inspiration I have been looking for.  This is design innovation at it's best. Each light is made from lead crystal decanters sourced from antique markets and vintage shops. Now I've seen "a lot" of fresh new design products, many of which have been featured in my home trends guides in Beverly Hills Lifestyle Magazine
Lee Broom is bringin' it all the way from the UK and I'm betting that the design peeps stateside are paying close attention.  Expect to see lots more where this came from.

Lee Broom is an interior and product designer based in the UK.  Specializing in Bar and Restaurant Interiors, Broom's list of awards and accolades is the envy of any designer. To see a portfolio of Lee's product and interiors visit

CHICAGO round up!

After 5 days of intensive leadership training and crowded elevators at NEOCON I had just a few hours left to explore the GRAND AVE design district in beautiful downtown Chicago. With over a dozen super cool urban storefronts, the district is an absolute MUST for every designer visiting the Chicago area.

After a thorough tour of the Urban Remains warehouse I jay walked across the street to The Find, an upscale showroom loaded to the rafters with vintage furnishings and accessories. I spied a Barcelona chaise, the coolest industrial console ever, and more lucite than you can shake a stick at.

The Find
Next door was The Painted Lady, a chic eclectic collection of furnishings and accessories with an urban edge. I gotta tell ya' - the talent behind the merchandising of this showroom gets a gold star for the coolest mix of cottage, traditional, industrial, and mid century goods.  Every vignette was balanced and charming.

The Painted Lady

Risking life and limb I darted back across the street to check out POST 27 as I was assured that no two showrooms are alike and that each one is worth the risk.  I was not disappointed. There I spied a restored steel desk right out of Mad Men and had I traveled to Chicago in the family truckster with the U-haul attached I would be typing this blog from it right now!

My final stop was SG Grand. The intoxicating aroma of candles and diffusers is my weakness and I could have spent the rest of the day perusing every nook of the exquisite showroom filled with art, mirrors, books, and furnishings for the home and garden. Bart, if you're reading this - I'll be back!

When I grow up, I wanna be just like...

I met Christine Lemieux, the founder & creative director of Dwell Studio last year at the Laguna Design Center.  She delivered an inspiring presentation on the cultivation of her her business and brand from which I have borrowed many practices and philosophies. Since then I have watched Dwell Studio prosper into what I think is one of the coolest new consumer brands on the market. The concept is not new but Lemieux's keen eye and relateability to the trade transcends that of the other guys and with that comes comes BIG RESPECT from the design community.  Here are a few of my favorite things...

Cooper Leather Chair
Post Modern Vibe with modern Mad Men Style

Gate Armoire
The gate pattern is borrowed from Christine's popular fabric line designed for Robert Allen.

Devoe Sconce
The slick metal and timeless patina adds drama and glamour to any room.

To see more visit or if you're in NY look up her newly opened flagship store!

Maison de Luxe

I relish the opportunity to experience the work of fellow designers whenever the opportunity arises. I mean really, there are simply not enough glossy magazines on the market to publicly showcase the work of the many talented designers on the scene today. Luckily, LUXE magazine and the city of Beverly Hills realized this and brought to us "Maison de Luxe" - a designer show house featuring many of my favorite designers.

Martyn Lawrence Bullard's Morrocan inspired bedroom was a lesson in style and masculinity. Featuring many of his own fabrics, the space was simply stunning.  Barclay Butera delivered his signature all- american contempoary style in the second floor family room with class and sophistication.  Sheldon Harte and John Henry Kaufman remain ahead of the curve bringing drama and a mysterious glamour to the first floor lounge.

My favorite? Nathan Turner turned out the rec. room with timeless style and impeccable global detail.

Barry Dixon's wrap around drapes and clever layering of furnishings - brilliant! It's a TIE.

For more images visit "the peak of chic" blog where I conveniently borrowed mine from.  Apparently they did not get the same reprimand I did when I tried to snap a few photos for my own blog.

Design Gives Back

What a pleasure to feature these amazing and generous interior designers in my Home Trends Guide for Beverly Hills Lifestyle Magazine this FALL.

Luxury furniture manufacturer Jonathan Franc has collaborated with top interior designers as part of a philanthropic effort to promote design through giving. Brothers John and Frank Bossone, owners of Jonathan Franc, extended a very special invitation to some of the biggest names in interior design to sketch a custom piece of furniture for this unique opportunity, then turned to their amazing design team to realize each designer’s vision into the “Design Gives Back” collection.

Benefitting organizations such as American Cancer Society, amFAR, and Autism Speaks, just to to name a few - this very exciting opportunity to support and give back is at the top of our list of holiday gift giving recommendations. To view the entire collection pick up the FALL ISSUE of Beverly Hills Lifestyle Magazine at select booksellers.

DRESS CODE Strictly Enforced

I'm obsessed with the new Dress Code furniture collection from Italy, making its US debut at Cantoni. Inlaid horn, coplanar doors, mirrored glass, lacquer and chrome accents, and oversized seating are just a few of the distinguishing marks of this elegant and refined furniture line.

Robi Melerba and his family have worked with Cantoni founder Michael Wikkov for years. They have conceived and crafted this new luxury line to add to the others they produce at their Itlaian factory.

I can not wait to visit my favorite Cantino Showroom in Irvine to experience this sexy and sophisticated line of modern furniture.
